The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996)

Here's a romantic comedy from the 1990s that begins when a talk show veterinarian named Abby (Janeane Garofalo) takes a call from Brian (Ben Chaplin), the owner of a roller-skating Great Dane. Brian is tantalized by Abby's voice and asks her to meet him. Abby is insecure about her looks and agrees to meet Brian, but describes herself as a tall blonde. She begs her attractive neighbor Noelle (Uma Thurman) to see Brian in her place.

This modern female version of Cyrano De Bergerac has cute moments, but isn't that original. Things get a bit complicated when Noelle starts falling for Brian who thinks she is Abby. At this point, the movie gains comedic momentum because Abby securely plays herself on the radio, but digs a deeper and deeper hole by letting Noelle continue the charade.

I hardly knew about Garofalo when I originally saw the movie, but I thought she was cute. The idea that she was insecure and playing the "unattractive" girl was a bit out of place. Eventually, Abby has to reveal the truth to Brian and all turns out awkwardly ok.

This film is kind of fast food entertainment. Rather formulaic, a bit bland, yet somewhat decent for what you paid for. It's a good video movie to watch with your significant other. This film gets a Tail Wag!
