"QUICK BITE"

The Pekinese, or Peke was first bred in China. They are much sturdier and sure footed than other small breed dogs. Children are better able to handle the Peke. Pekes are normally found to be brave and loyal little dogs. Training this breed may be challenging due to its independence and foreseen stubbornness. Breathing and eye problems can be common in this breed. Since much exercise is needed, the Peke is regarded as a good type of dog for apartment life.

Not Your Granny's Lap Dog!
By: Tadashi Rubright
What do you get when a lion and a marmoset fall in love and have a baby? According to the Chinese legend a lion and a marmoset fell in love, but the lion was much too large. After the lion cried his sorrow he was shrunk to the size of the marmoset and wedded the marmoset. Their baby was the first Pekinese ever born. The China native Pekinese has been around for 2000 years and its "lion-hearted" attitude are both evident and secure when you first meet one. The Pekinese or "Peke" as it is commonly nicknamed is not the delicate flower that it may appear when you first meet it. A person may think of this longhaired breed being one that enjoys sitting with Grandma. While Pekes may enjoy relaxing with friends and family they are also considered to be brave and sturdy little dogs that may be small in stature but large in both personality and willpower. Their larger bodies and stouter shapes make them able to handle playing with smaller children more than some of the smaller framed toy breeds like the Yorkshire terrier and the Chihuahua. They have a tendency to be very independent and have been compared to being more in the mindset of a cat when it comes to training them in basic commands. This however should not always be taken at face value. Pekes may need a little persuading when it comes to training, but if your Peke is devoted to you than you have a courageous dog willing to take on the world to protect the one's they love. Please be aware that Pekes can be prone to jealousy and stubbornness, so a patient parent is needed to take care of this breed. Pekinese can also develop health problems common in many "short nosed" breeds which include eye ulcers and breathing problems. This breed does very well in apartments since continuous exercise is not needed to maintain well being. Just make sure that you do take your Peke out for walks occasionally or you may end up with an overweight puppy! If you are looking for a smart, funny, sturdy and devoted small breed of dog, a Pekinese is a good choice to add to the family, and yes that family can also include Granny.
