The Furry Little Comedian

By: Tadashi Rubright

The Pug is the whole package when it comes to being a comedian. Pugs are naturally friendly and comedic in both look and attitude. This breed originated in China and were first bred to be companions for Chinese emperors during the Shang dynasty. Pugs we see today normally have short and square bodies. Their faces are round, while their muzzle and forehead are very wrinkled. Pugs are generally good natured and friendly dogs that love attention and affection. When considering a Pug as a lifetime pet, one needs to be aware that Pugs are by nature extremely clingy dogs. Pugs will happily follow their human companion wherever they may go. While most people enjoy this fact, it can become an issue because Pugs can become very underfoot.

Pugs generally love children and other animals. Pugs have a tendency to be excitable, prone to jumping and play nipping. Proper training may be needed to lessen these behaviors. Training with this breed can be a challenge due to the fact that many Pugs may feel that they don't need training at all. With this in mind training a dog with so much personality may require a lot of patience and affection. The fact that Pugs are a very sturdy breed means children accidentally hurting a Pug is not a huge concern.

Considering that Pugs have shorter noses, some health problems may include breathing issues and a larger risk of eye injury than longer nosed breeds. Pugs do well in most environments and do not need a large amount of exercise to remain healthy. Just remember that a pudgy Pug will become part of your life if not exercised at all.
