Great Danes are a hunting breed originating in Germany used to hunt wild boar, wolves and deer. They can grow as big as 200 pounds and stand nearly 3 feet tall. They have a sweet temprement and are good with children. Danes typically live less than 10 years and are prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors, heart disease and tail injuries. Danes need to be trained as puppies or can have dominance issues with other animals and be difficult to handle. This breed needs exercise and space. Popular culture has brought us Scooby Doo, Astro and Marmaduke, all based on the "Gentle Giant!" |

The Great Dane is a large hunting dog that originated in Germany. The breed goes back hundreds of years and is seen often in literature. The breed's original purpose was to be able to take on wild board, wolves and deer. They were prized by Danish royalty.
Danes are giant dogs and can get as big as 200 pounds plus! Males can stand nearly 3 feet tall. As big as the Dane is, it has a stable, kind temperament, thus the nickname, "Gentle Giant." Like most large breeds, its life expectancy is typically under 10 years. I'm fascinated by the many colors they come in. Like a greyhound, they have a number of beautiful variations such as Fawn, Brindle, Blue, Black, and Harlequin. They can be prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, tumors heart disease and tail injuries. These dogs need exercise and room to stretch out.
 An interesting fact is that many pure white Danes tend to be deaf.
If considering a Great Dane for a pet, many things need to be wisely thought through. First, train the Dane early when you get it as a puppy. A dog of this size will be very difficult to deal with if not taught boundaries and good habits right away. It can get along with other animals if introduced to them as a pup. Otherwise, some dominance and aggression issues can become a problem. They are typically patient and playful with children. They are easy to groom and an average shedding dog.
Some fun facts: Both Scooby Doo and the Jetson's Astro were based on the Great Dane. Another popular cartoon character, "Marmaduke" is a Great Dane. Not a surprise, since the Great Dane is full of personality and a site to see! |
